Please welcome my guest today, author CS Alleyne, who has joined me to answer a few questions.

Let’s start with you telling us a little about yourself

I grew up in Australia and while I loved the wide open spaces, sports and social side, as an only child I also spent a lot of time on my own. I was always very bookish and loved writing too whether it was for school essays which required research or English short stories.

I originally trained as a hotel manager in the UK and after several postings in the Caribbean, I changed course and took up lecturing and consultancy which continues to this day. I completed my MBA, followed by a PhD in Information Systems and also raised my family.

Both my work and fiction writing combine the research element which I love. On the fiction side, my fascination with the supernatural and death, mean that my writing can be very dark. And that makes the research very interesting to me lol! I had a novelette, POWEЯ published in December, 2020 and Belle Vue is my debut novel.

How did you get into writing?

Over the years I’ve jotted down notes and ideas for the novel I was going to write one day. But with my career, travelling and family commitments (and dare I say socialising), I never got round to completing anything  except end up with reams of half written stories and a lot of yellowing note paper! Even now I still like to jot these down on paper rather than my tablet. The novel was always something I was going to do in the future but then that unexpectedly changed. I used to go past a derelict asylum on my way to the gym. It was then converted into luxury flats and some time later, I found a book in the library about murders in Hertfordshire (the county in which I live). In it there was a case about a girl in that asylum who was murdered. That story and my connection to the location, captured my attention in a way nothing had done before. So suddenly with the Muse upon me, I wrote every spare minute I could get and didn’t stop until Belle Vue was complete.

Please tell me about your Belle Vue

My debut novel, Belle Vue, is a paranormal horror which is told in two strands – past and present – around a Victorian lunatic asylum and the people who live there. It is very dark and focuses on an unspeakable crime, the hunger for justice and how when revenge is paramount, innocence doesn’t count. It will be published on 25th August 2020 by Crystal Lake Publishing.

Jealousy, betrayal, murder and a hunger for vengeance that spans the centuries…

History student Alex Palmer is thrilled when his girlfriend, Claire Ryan, buys an apartment in Belle Vue Manor, formerly a Victorian lunatic asylum.

But as Alex begins to discover the dark truth about the asylum’s past, he, Claire, and their friend Marianne find themselves on a nightmarish journey. Each will face the deadly consequences of the evil that began with the construction of the first Belle Vue Manor by an aristocratic French émigré in 1789, as well as the cruelty and satanic practices that continued when it became an asylum for the insane.

As the two strands—past and present—unfold, Alex uncovers a supernatural mystery where revenge is paramount and innocence irrelevant—without being aware of the price he, and those around him, will pay.

BELLE VUE can be pre-ordered on Amazon in paperback and will be available in ebook and audio formats.

Do you base your characters on people you know or strangers you see in the streets?

When I first started writing the novel proper, I thought that would be how I wholly created the characters using my own experiences of life, film, tv and other books. But when I got down to it, while I am sure they influenced what I created, I found that the characters developed from the story I wanted to tell and who would be the most appropriate type of person for what I wanted them to be and do. For me that was a fascinating process and what I didn’t expect was that – for me – the characters became so strong that it was as though they were directing their actions and speech on the page, not my imagination!

Where does your writing career go from here?

Belle Vue is now planned to be the first of a trilogy. I am in the middle of writing the sequel – Secret Nemesis is the working title – and in it, the main characters from both the Victorian and present day move to the United States and face a cross-fire of evil and danger. So more research on murder and general skulduggery, asylums in the US and satanic societies that side of the pond.
